Sending the same email to your entire list is the fastest way to train people to ignore you. Segmentation — grouping contacts so each message fits the person receiving it — is the highest-leverage change most email programs can make.
What segmentation actually is
Segmentation splits your audience into groups by shared traits or behavior — industry, plan, lifecycle stage, or how they have engaged — so the right message reaches the right people. A segment can be static (a fixed list) or dynamic (updating itself as contacts change).
The segments worth building first
Engagement: recent openers and clickers versus contacts who have gone quiet — mail them differently. Lifecycle: new signups, active users, and lapsed contacts each need a different message. Behavior: people who visited pricing or clicked a key link are signaling intent. Attributes: industry, role, or plan when your value proposition changes by segment.
Prefer dynamic segments
Static lists drift out of date the moment you build them. Dynamic segments re-evaluate membership automatically, so a contact who just went cold, or who just crossed a lead-score threshold, moves into the right segment without anyone maintaining a spreadsheet.

Avoid over-segmentation
More segments is not automatically better. If a segment is too small to matter or you cannot create genuinely different content for it, it is overhead, not value. Start with a handful of segments that change what you send, and add more only when they change a decision.
Watch the right metrics
Judge segmentation by engagement and conversion within each segment, not just overall opens. If your engaged segment thrives while your cold segment does not respond, that is a signal to run a re-engagement program and prune what stays cold — which also protects deliverability.
